Our Story
Plant originated as a tiny living room venture in 2011 by Kyle and Erika Chow. Kyle decided to try his hand at terrarium-making after seeing contemporary versions of the 70’s trend all over the west coast. He started out making simple versions of these miniature landscapes for family and friends, then made the leap to selling terrariums at the Red Deer Farmer’s Market under the name Plant.
After a successful trial in Red Deer, Plant joined Market Collective and found a whole community of support. They attended markets all over Alberta and Saskatchewan, constructing a frequently expanding product line from their tiny 650 square foot home. After a busy holiday season in 2013, it became clear that the living room was not an optimal studio, so the hunt for a space began.
Plant’s brick-and-mortar shop opened in March 2014 in a 1000 square foot space in Inglewood. Originally fuelled by Kyle and Erika with occasional free labour from friends and family, Plant now employs a large team of talented and dedicated staff. Plant also secured its dream space in 2016: a converted garage with 3000 square feet of usable space in one of Canada’s best neighborhoods. With a continually-expanding product line, partnerships with local and international makers, artists, and craftspeople, Plant is known for offering unique, well-curated selection of products and designs, and friendly, approachable customer service.
